About Jim

Jim Umhoefer considers himself one of the world's best vacationers. Ever since he can remember, his dad and mom took their family of seven on hiking trips around his home state of Wisconsin, visiting as many state parks as they could.

His dad always took along his Leica 35mm camera and his mom inspired Jim with her love of language. Between the two, Jim developed his own brand of outdoor and travel writing and photography.

Jim and his wife, Margy, have taken their two children on adventures around the country. They have traveled by train in eastern and western Canada, camped in the Florida Keys, backpacked in the canyon country of Utah, mountain biked in Arizona, and canoed in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of Minnesota.

Wherever their family wanders, Jim brings along his camera gear and journals to record the trip. If you look carefully, you'll recognize his family in many of Jim's feature travel articles and outdoor guidebooks. In addition, Jim makes yearly journeys to backcountry destinations in Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming or Idaho.

As a professional vagabond, Jim specializes in outdoor family recreation, backcountry travel and general travel destination articles and photography.

His work has been published in the Sunday Travel Sections of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, the Chicago TRIBUNE, the Los Angeles TIMES, the Denver POST and the Kansas City STAR. In addition, Jim's writing and photography have appeared in such publications as COUNTRY Magazine, ODYSSEY, SNOW COUNTRY, BETTER HOMES and GARDENS, HISTORIC TRAVELER, GO BOATING, MOTORHOME, and TRAILER LIFE magazines.

Jim is also the writer and photographer of four outdoor/travel guidebooks about Minnesota and Wisconsin. He has photographed the coffee table book called "Outhouses" and has updated the Minnesota and Wisconsin chapters of the Fodor's and USA Guides.

Jim is still an active traveller doing travel and writing assignments around the world.
